TOP 03: SINGLES

Hell hath no fury like this illness going around. And just as I thought I was going to be able to avoid it this year it hits me like a ton of bricks. Needless to say, I really don't have a voice and every time I move it hurts. I've been trying to rest for the past 3 days but it hasn't seemed to help much, so now I'm on antibiotics and hoping I can kill this SOB. We'll see.

Tomorrow marks 2004 and with it the final guest post of the month from Will Calcutt, the man responsible for many photos/visuals around here. Big thanks to all those who participated. You made my month of insane activity that much more bearable.

So without further ado and no explanation for each one...here's the rest of the lists:

TOP SINGLES FOR 2003

20. Liz Phair- Why Can't I? (Major Label)
19. Donnacha Costello- To This Thee Night (Kompakt)
18. No Doubt- It's My Life (Major Label)
17. Justus Kohncke- Homogen (Kompakt)
16. TV On the Radio- Staring at the Sun (Touch and Go)
15. Darkness- I Believe In a Thing Called Love
14. Goldfrapp- Train (Mute)
13. Andrew WK- Totally Stupid (Major Label)
12. Darkness- Friday Night (Major Label)
11. REM- Bad Day (Major Label)

10. Osborn- Daylight (Spectral)
Smooth yet utterly danceable grooves from the most talented electronic music producer in Ann Arbor.

09. Saturday Looks Good to Me- Can't Ever Sleep (Polyvinyl)
How fucking prophetic is this song? It's about a guy who has trouble sleeping and hooks up with this girl and then things get all complex.

08. Outkast- Way You Move (Major Label)
Yeah yeah, everyone's talking about how great Hey Ya is, and it's a good pop song but guess what? This one's way better.

07. Radiohead- Wolf at the Door
The paranoia of the world's zaniest group meets the mafia. Hilarity ensues.

06. Death Cab for Cutie- Death of an Interior Decorator
I'm not quite sure what this song is about, but the inner emo teen in me just can't stop listening to it and feeling sad.

05. Luomo- What Good
Tessio this, Tessio that. This song's much better and should have been all over the fashion runways in NYC and Europe. Fucking sassy at its best. It also should have been the theme song for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

04. Postal Service- Such Great Heights
Happy go poppy 80s synth song meets sappy lyrics and good production by DNTEL.

03. Beyonce- Crazy in Love
The first person I heard play this was Theo Parrish, right when the single got released. For some reason it just sounds better when he played it than whenever I heard it on a Pepsi commercial. Very soulful track, and if you could get rid of that horrible Jay Z rap in the bridge it would be so much better.

02. Matthew Dear- Dog Days (Spectral)
I'm really not sure what Matt's going on about here, but somehow he channeled the spirit of early Depeche Mode with this one. Poppy, dark, genius all at once.

01. Kelley Polar Quartet- Rhythm Touch (Environ)
For some reason almost every motherfucker in Detroit that lavished Metro Area in 2002 slept on this one, almost as if they forgot that Environ was still around releasing quality shit. Granted, it was a comparitively quiet year for the Environites..but they DID release two long lost classic disco 12s and this nugget, which in a sense meant less was actually more..as the quality was so damn high. Taking things back to Prelude's finest hours with this one complete with very middle eastern influenced string arrangements, this one has rarely left the turntable at home and never left the DJ box for 2003. Absolutely essential.

LATER ON: The top records of 03.
